A large tenor viol (also good to use as a lyra viol), that brings the
midrange partiture back into the consort. It can stand up against the
other members, is equal to the bass and treble viol.

-THE ORIGINAL-
the original instrument is part of the Hill collection of the Ashmolean
Museum in Oxford. Dated 1598, and originally used as a lyra
viol.
Highly decorated with a man's head with golden hair.
-ABOUT JOHN
ROSE-
In a
cronical of 1631, there two instrument-makers with this name are
mentioned,
father and son. Uncertain however is wether the older
one died in
1563. He lived in Bridewell near London and was of Italien origin. He was
a violmaker and a merchant of lutes since
1552.
His son,
apprentice and successor John
Rose
jr. was one of the best viol and lutemakers according to the
17th century
musicians.
One of the
few surviving instruments, is this lyra viol. He was buried in
Bridewell on
29-7-1611, and probably lived there his whole life

USED ON
THE SHOWN EXAMPLES-
The "Lauter" viol has a fingerboard and tailpiece, which has
been veneered with ebony, inlayed with maple and finished with
snakewood
sides. This in combination with a
ebony tailpieceholder, ebony pegs with black pips and rings.
The "Hofmann" viol has a fingerboard and tailpiece, which has
been veneered with quilted maple, inlayed with maple and finished
with ebony
sides. This in combination with a maple tailpieceholder,
boxwood pegs with black pips and rings.
For the ribs and back quilted maple is used.
